Booking a family photo session is such an exciting step! It’s a chance to capture those genuine smiles, silly moments, and the love that makes your family unique. But if you’ve never done this before, you might wonder what actually happens during the shoot. Don’t worry - I’m here to walk you through everything you can expect, so you feel confident and ready to enjoy the experience.
What Happens During a Family Photo Session Guide
When you arrive for your session, make sure you show up ready for play and connection. No matter how the day is going, I show up with a relaxed and friendly vibes, as well as my phone on hand to play any music your kiddos might like!
Next, we’ll start moving around the location you chose - whether it’s a park, your backyard, or a cozy indoor spot. I love natural light and candid moments, so expect me to give some prompts if you're unsure where to begin. My sessions are child-led so normally after a couple of prompts, the kiddos are warmed up to steal the show.
Don’t worry if your kids get a bit restless or shy. I’m used to working with all ages and will keep things light and playful. Sometimes, I’ll even bring along a few props or games to keep the energy up. The session usually lasts about an hour, which is just enough time to capture a variety of shots without anyone getting too tired.

How to Prepare for Your Family Photo Session Guide
Preparation is key to a smooth and enjoyable session. Here are some tips I always share with families:
Choose outfits that complement each other but don’t match exactly. Think coordinating colors or similar tones.
Keep it simple and comfortable. Avoid busy patterns or logos that distract from your faces. Wear clothing that is flowy to capture some movement. No stiff clothes over here!
Bring snacks and water especially if you have little ones. A quick break can work wonders.
Plan for the weather. If it’s an outdoor shoot, have a backup plan by bringing extra clothes and dress according to the weather. Layers are encouraged on colder days!
Get a good night’s sleep! Everyone looks better when they’re well rested. Do not plan a night out with the kids the night before. tired kids are grumpy kids, well rested kids are happy kids!
Also, try to arrive at least 10 minutes early so you’re not rushed. This gives everyone a chance to settle in and get comfortable with the surroundings.
What to Bring and What to Expect on the Day
On the day of your session, packing a small bag with a few essentials can make a big difference:
Extra outfits or layers in case of spills or weather changes.
Favorite toys or comfort items for younger kids.
A small blanket or mat if you plan to sit on the ground.
Hairbrush or comb for quick touch-ups.
Snack snacks snacks, do I say more?
During the shoot, expect a relaxed pace. I’ll take breaks if needed and encourage you to interact naturally. The best photos come from moments when you’re just being yourselves - laughing, hugging, or even dancing around.
If you’re nervous about posing, don’t be! I’ll guide you every step of the way with easy, natural directions. The goal is to capture your family’s unique connection, not stiff, forced smiles.
After the Session: What Happens Next?
Once the session wraps up, I’ll get to work editing your photos. This usually takes about 2-3 weeks. I focus on enhancing colors, lighting, and removing any distractions while keeping the images natural and true to your family’s vibe.
You’ll receive a custom gallery of your best shots to view online. From there, you can select your favorites for prints, albums, or digital downloads. Many families love creating holiday cards or wall art from their photos - it’s a wonderful way to keep those memories alive.
If you have any questions or want to order additional products, I’m always here to help. Building lasting relationships with families is what I love most about this job.
Making the Most of Your Family Photo Session
To get the most out of your session, here are a few final tips:
Relax and have fun! The more you enjoy the moment, the better the photos will be. If you show up and yell at your kids, and they begrudgingly do what you say, that will show in the photos.
Trust your photographer. We’re here to guide you and capture your story. The more you trust me, the better your photos will be.
Plan ahead. Think about how you want to use your photos and share that with me in our planning consultation.
